Referral Process

How to refer a patient and what to expect.

The referral process is direct and low-friction. We accept referrals from clinical providers and support family self-referral. Call our team or submit through our secure online referral tool. Please don't email clinical information or a completed referral.

Referral Steps

How to submit a referral.

Step 1

Contact Our Team

Reach us by phone to initiate a referral or discuss a patient before referring. We welcome provider-to-provider conversations at any stage of the referral decision, including situations where you are not yet sure whether referral is appropriate. Email is fine for general questions, but please don't send clinical information or a completed referral by email. Use our secure online referral tool instead.

Step 2

Provide Clinical Background

At the time of referral, helpful information includes the patient's presenting concern, feeding and medical history, current intake and feeding methods, and any prior feeding-related interventions or provider guidance. This helps us prepare appropriately and schedule the right type of evaluation.

Share this by phone or through our secure online referral tool. Please don't send clinical history or a completed referral form by email.

Step 3

Family Contact & Scheduling

Submitting a referral does not automatically book an appointment. After we receive the referral, families should call (972) 836-7080 to schedule an evaluation. We'll communicate with the referring team if there is any scheduling delay or clinical urgency consideration.

Step 4

Evaluation & Follow-Up

Following evaluation, the family receives clear recommendations and next steps. Referring providers may request a written evaluation summary, which we provide directly. For patients in ongoing therapy, we are available to communicate progress or address specific clinical questions as they arise.

What Helps

Information that strengthens a referral from the start.

Providing relevant clinical background at the time of referral allows us to schedule the appropriate appointment type, prepare for the evaluation, and ask better questions during intake. None of the items below are required, but all of them improve evaluation quality and efficiency.

  • Primary feeding concern as understood clinically
  • Gestational age at birth and any NICU history
  • Current feeding method (breast, bottle, tube, or combination)
  • Current daily volume and feeding frequency
  • Relevant diagnoses or significant comorbidities
  • Prior feeding evaluations or therapy history
  • Instrumental swallow studies, if applicable
  • Specific caregiver concerns or observed feeding behaviors
  • Other providers currently involved in the patient's care

Self-Referral

Families may contact us directly without a physician referral. We accept self-referrals and can help families determine whether evaluation is appropriate and how to coordinate with their primary care provider if needed.

Response Time

We aim to respond to referral inquiries within one business day. For time-sensitive clinical questions, phone contact is recommended.

Ongoing Collaboration

How we work with referring providers after the initial referral.

Evaluation Summaries

Written evaluation summaries, including clinical findings, functional feeding assessment, and recommendations, are provided within 48 hours upon request, in a format suitable for chart documentation.

Progress Communication

For patients in ongoing therapy, we are available to communicate progress updates, changes in clinical status, or recommendations relevant to the referring provider's management plan.

Cross-Discipline Coordination

When appropriate, we coordinate with other providers involved in the patient's care, including pediatricians, neonatologists, GI, pulmonary, complex care, lactation, and nutrition, to ensure feeding therapy fits within the broader clinical picture.
